Life can be hard when you are the new girl at a new school when, at the same time, you are going through tough family problems. A Yerba Buena high schooler named Eunice Rios knows how that feels.
She has gone through struggles at school when she didn’t fit in. She has also gone through struggles at home when her parents would fight. But even though it was not easy, she got through those obstacles with the help of her supporters.
Eunice Rios has learned that hardship can be challenging but you’re never alone to deal with your problems, either at home or at school.
Eunice had to deal with a lot when she was the new girl in her new elementary school. She didn’t feel welcome by the other kids and only felt like an outsider. Not having many friends made her lose self confidence and she felt lost.
On top of how she felt at school, her family problems at home added to what she was experiencing at school.
Her family was struggling and she didn’t know how to distract herself from them or help them out. “I guess...it was a struggle,” she said. “It would be really hard on me. At first, I didn’t find the solution to my problems and how to cope with it.”
With so many problems around, it was hard for Eunice to stay confident, positive, and strong.
But as she grew up, her life finally started to brighten up. In middle school, she made kind and loving friends who were always there to help her out.
Those friends “...made me feel better. They made me feel like I have support. They made me feel like I’m not alone to carry this burden”. To Eunice, her friends were people who would never leave her alone to deal with struggles.
Eunice, no longer had to watch her back wondering who out of her friends are fake, because she came across real ones. They shared their feelings with her and she realized that there were so many others who had to go through the same problems as she did.
One of her most supporting and loving friend was her brother, who she says was always there for her.
“My brother would be there when my parents had arguments and when there would be fights,” Eunice said. “Whenever I’d be crying, he’d be the first one by my side.” He wasn’t just a brother to her, but also her best friend.
“He has always been with me and we tell each other everything,” She said. We share everything, we’ve gone through problems and solved them together.”
Once Eunice reached her high school years, the issues she used to have were no longer anything to worry about. Things were treating her well and she was happy within herself.
“I got to meet a lot more people,” she said. “I got to meet teachers that are good to me and have helped me with some of my problems.”
All through high school, Eunice has started to rebuild her confidence. She now knows how to deal with tough problems, especially since now she has so many friends.
Eunice says that the people around her changed who she is. “I’m not the sad person I used to be before,” she said. “I’m not the depressed girl as I used to be.”
When looking at her past, Eunice realizes that “there are people who go through similar things as I do and we should always help each other through those problems.”
Eunice is a happy and confident person right now. She says that every challenge she goes through only makes her stronger.
Eunice found her strength because of “...my friends from school, my siblings, and music,” she said. “They would help me feel relaxed and that would help me realize that I’m not the only one going through struggles. My friends and my siblings always had my back.”
As a high schooler, Eunice spends her time hanging out with her friends, listening to music, and just having fun and rebuilding herself.
