Its upsetting to know that President Trump’s administration's are recently trying to redefine sex. This is dangerous and life threatening to the LGBT community because it encourages close-minded thinking. When I first read about it I felt and still feel outraged.
According to The New York Times, Trump's administration said that, “sex means a person's status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth.”
Personally, it’s affected me because it has made me furious knowing that Trump is wanting to ban transgenders from the military and wanting to redefine sex.
I told my mom on what's been happening, and I didn't expect the reaction she gave me. She was really happy to hear what he said; she said that's the only good thing he has done so far from being president.
Hearing that made me scared to come out to her as being a part of the LGBT community and telling her my opinion of the situation.
My mom is very against the LGBT community. She would always try to convince me that people are ill if they are gay. I would always agree with her to have her stop talking about that because it gets me furious how she's against people who want to be themselves and open. I would sometimes try to talk to her to try to give her another perspective about the LGBT community.
I’d say, “Don’t you think people should like whoever they want and be how they want to be?” But I'd always get the same response of how it isn’t “normal.” She thinks its just weird.
I've heard her say, “What goes through people's head to do things like that?” and “People should only like the opposite gender of themselves. People who don't must have had a bad childhood to make them think/like different.”
I get extremely disappointed because I feel like it’d be best if she just let people do what they like and like what they like.
According to an article titled “Trump’s effort to erase transgender rights” from The New York Times, there were many letters to the editor. One specifically was from Jeremy D. Kidd who said, “It's ridiculous to say you can define something out of existence. Transgender people will exist, regardless of the administration's attempt to pretend they don’t.” Jeremy has a point on this. No matter how the Trump administration tries to define sex or transgender, people will always find a way to fight back.
The transgender community has already experienced not been accepted for a long time, with some trans youth even committing suicide. With the Trump administration’s stance, they may feel even more attacked and suicide rates could get even higher.
What Trump has been trying to do—from wanting to ban trans in the military to trying to redefine sex—is cruel and dangerous. It’s upsetting to me personally, especially because I see myself as part of the LGBT community.
I'd like people to see me and others for who they are without any labels. This is important because we deserve equal rights as Americans, and if President Trump doesn't accept that maybe he shouldn't be president. We should stand up for ourselves, and not feel afraid of coming out and being ourselves.
