It's a sad reality that a lot of people have body image issues, especially young girls. This was the case for Yerba Buena junior Lina Castillon. Although this was a constant in her life, she decided to join gymnastics which helped her gain confidence and a sense of belonging.
“I always wanted to do something like gymnastics but I always felt like I didn't have the body for it,” she said.
When Lina was 11 years old, her mom signed her up for tumbling classes which Lina continued to go to for the next three years.
During those three years Lina said she had felt very accepted because she was surrounded by a diverse group of girls, some who struggled with similar issues.
When Lina started her sophomore year at Yerba Buena, she decided to try out for the cheerleading team and made it into varsity, a big feat for a lowerclassmen like her at the time.
“If I hadn't done tumbling for all those years I don't think I ever would have tried out for cheer,” she said.
Cheer is also the place where Lina met her three closest friends Veronica, Teresa, and Jasmine; she says they've helped her through a lot.
“Veronica is the type of friend i can call at like 1 in the morning and vent to you know?”, she said.
