Being a junior can be really stressful, especially when taking AP classes. For Jazmine Basa, a senior at Yerba Buena High School, taking AP classes was definitely a challenge for her.
She suffered from a lot of stress, which made her isolate herself from the real world. Isolating herself caused her to be toxic towards her loved ones. Although this was hard for her, she still managed to make some of her closest friends through that period of time.
At some point, Jazmine felt like all of her emotions were being put aside and were being ignored: “The hardest part was not having someone to talk to so your emotions just bottle up and sometimes you just explode,” Jazmine said.
Some people would even think that she was fake because she wouldn’t interact with them as much.
Feeling very lonely was very common for Jazmine; she felt like she couldn’t talk to anyone about her emotions. All of the work and loneliness just keep piling over and over until she met her friends.
One of her closest friends would be her boyfriend, Joey Garcia. They became really good friends in 9th grade through the game League of Legends. They connected because they endured similar struggles such as mental health issues, loneliness, and family problems.
“My favorite place would be my boyfriend's house because we feel more real with each other,” she said. “It’s place were we don’t have to put on a mask and pretend to be someone we’re not.”
Another person that she considers her best friend would have to be her mom. Although they had conflicts before due to personal family issues, they got over them by talking them out. Nowadays, they are closer as a result of their communication.
Every time she feels lonely she likes to watch movies, and she also likes to draw. Jazmine is a person who has always struggled with health issues that’s why when she grows older she wants to be a psychiatrist.
“Even the hardest obstacles are overcomeable,” she says.
Jazmine took AP classes again this year again. Although she struggled last year, she has also learned something good out of them. She feels like she needs to challenge herself each year a little bit.
Jazmine says, “It’s hard, but I learned from my mistakes last year: never abandon yourself along the way. Don’t beat yourself up for your flaws. We all trip all fall before learning to stand. We all make flaws; part of being human is making mistakes and learning from them.”
