We all enjoy entertainment. Many of us love watching YouTube videos, and it’s the entertainment that most of us rely on. It’s our source for information and happiness, but there comes a time when videos make a wrong turn.
You’ve probably heard of the recent controversy surrounding a video that 22-year-old YouTuber Logan Paul posted on the 31st of December. For those who are not aware who he is, essentially, Logan is an Ex-Viner and YouTube Vlogger with a large fanbase who posts provocative videos. His December 31st video post shook the world and caused him to go into hiatus for several weeks.
So what was the controversy all about? Well, the video that Logan Paul uploaded shows him and his friends walking through the Aokigahara Forest in Japan, also known as the “Suicide Forest” due to many people having taken their lives there. Logan encountered a body that was being hung off a tree. According to YouTube, the person hanging in the video was dead and had been there prior to the video being recorded.
The content of the video violated YouTube’s guideline to not depict dead bodies, which cost Logan Paul his YouTube channel to be reviewed for further consequences.
The main concern about this video is that Logan made the wrong move of filming a dead person and uploading and sharing it online. This is what started the backlash against him. Logan Paul faced quite a lot of consequences after he uploaded the video.
According to an article by Mike Wright from Telegraph.co.uk, YouTube’s Chief Business Officer Robert Kyncl said that all projects associated with Logan Paul were being “on hold”. Logan Paul was removed from the Google’s Advertising Program and is not going to be featured in the upcoming YouTube film ‘The Thinning 2’.
Logan Paul’s channel was given a “temporary strike” for a violation of their terms of having no graphic content in videos. Paul himself said he would be taking a break from vlogging to “reflect”. Even so, there has been a petition made to have Logan’s channel deleted. So far 500,000 people have signed it, but their goal is to reach 1 million signatures.
Responses from America were merely expected since suicide is commonly well known and considering Logan that has really made a name for himself, he wouldn’t have been taken so lightly. But have you considered checking outside the country? Especially the most notable one, Japan, since that was where Logan had been making his vlogs at for some time.

A student from Silver Creek High School, Jarrod Calk, shared his views towards Logan’s video. Jarrod said, “When I first saw the video, I thought they just had the idea of sleeping inside the Aokigahara Forest to discover the haunted sayings people had said about it, but when they found the body I think they took the wrong action of recording the body and uploading it on Youtube, especially since Logan has quite a young fanbase.”
Jarrod said that the video made him feel bad for the person in the video who took his life, also his family and how disrespectful Logan and his friends were towards him.
Jarrod claims, “I kind of think that Logan decided to upload the video simply for views, seeing as how big controversial videos like these get noticed. Especially considering that he went into one of the biggest suicide hotspots known in the world, so something most likely would get people to watch.”
Jarrod says, “I think that Logan may get a second chance because of how big his fanbase is, as of now, he is slowly dying out, but when the time comes he’ll be back into making vlogs again.”
In my honest opinion, I feel as if it wasn’t necessary for Logan to upload the video, or at least not point the camera at the body. Yes, he may have wanted to spread awareness for suicide, but there are images that people don’t need to see/know. If you wanted to spread awareness, you wouldn’t have to go that far as to enter the suicide forest. Your support and donations are good enough. For anyone who knows a person they love that is suicidal, please don’t hesitate to help them. Everyone’s lives matter.
