Ever since the North Korean hydrogen bomb test on September 3rd 2017, U.S. and South Korean citizens have feared war breaking out between the U.S., South Korea, and North Korea. We are so used to our daily routines like work, school, taking care of siblings or family, but if a N.K. nuke or an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) hits the U.S., all of that can be gone in a second.
The threat of war with North Korea is now truly a possibility, and many have worried that war may be the only solution to this tension.
Robert Tang, a sophomore at YB, had stated what the consequences would be if war between the U.S. and N.K. breaks out, he states “N.K. is just plain stupid. They’re just bragging and being aggressive towards the U.S., they want attention. If war does break out between the U.S. and N.K., nuclear war is a possibility, meaning resources used, families losing sons, and innocent lives taken.”
He had first learned about this issue on September 12th, but hasn’t heard about the recent U.N. sanctions against N.K. from the CNN article titled “U.N. passes fresh sanctions in North Korea” by Zachary Cohen and Richard Roth. He believes war is not the solution, but wants a peace negotiation or meeting between the two nations and that there are other ways to resolve this issue.
According to Robert, if war does break between the 2 nations, “nuclear weapons is a scary possibility, which can be disastrous to the U.S. and N.K. The economy will be destroyed or go down, families losing sons and people being drafted to fight a land war.”
Threats view the U.S. as an aggressive and nosy country because usually the U.S. likes to poke their heads in an other country’s business. If we indeed go to war with the North, several countries will be affected by it. Especially the South because they have U.S. bases there and their capital city will be destroyed by N.K. artillery fire.
China and Russia will also be affected because even though they’ve cut off communications with North Korea, they’re technically still allies with them, Russia had previously said that war with the North isn’t an option by the U.S. and had also opposed U.N. sanctions on N.K. before.
Our allies will not get involved at least if Russia doesn’t get involved or doesn’t intervene in the war on North Korea’s side. Robert later stated, “North Korea is doing this just to show power, brag about their country, and be a bully to the South.”
Also, just recently the North Korean foreign minister had stated “the U.S. had declared war on them and were willing to shoot down U.S. bombers, whether they fly over their airspace or not, but the U.S. has stated it didn’t declare war on N.K.," CNN politics reported on an article of “North Korea accuses Trump of declaring war.”
Even though it might not escalate to war just yet, many fear or dread the day that N.K. declares war on the United States and a full out war breaks out between the two countries and their allies.
