Elon Musk, CEO for SpaceX and Tesla, has recently been changing the aerospace scene. We know a lot about the world and things around us, but something that has almost always remained unknown is space exploration. Muskhas made several advancements during his tenure with the company, and if he continues at this pace, he may very well accomplish his ultimate goal of one day colonizing Mars.
Elon Musk is a South African born entrepreneur and has multiple degrees in physics and business. He made his initial fortune from co-founding PayPal back in 2002. Since then, he has founded SolarCity, Tesla Motors, and lastly, SpaceX.
Although he owns multiple companies, you will most likely find him in his office at the SpaceX headquarters. The company was founded in 2002, but it started making headlines back in 2009 when it launched its first rocket. A year before he started the company, his mission was to start a company that would make Americans want to get back into space.
SpaceX is also creating what they call the ‘HyperLoop.’ It is essentially a bullet train that would take you from London to Los Angeles or San Francisco for the fraction of the cost of plane ticket. In terms of speed, we’ve been informed that it would be able to take us from San Francisco to LA in just 35 minutes.
One of the most distinguishable things SpaceX does is reuse rockets. Their most expensive rocket costs 90 million, while one similar to it would cost roughly 3 times that amount if not for their innovation. NASA does not and you can see the difference in their budgets: NASA’s is almost at 20 billion while SpaceX spends just 1 billion a year.
I interviewed a friend of the family, Josue, wanting to know how a person unaware on the topic would see this technological advancement. I started up by asking him if he knew what SpaceX is, in which he replied, “I know it’s space company, but I really don’t know what they’ve done to separate themselves from NASA.”
I asked about the possibility of SpaceX finding a way of colonizing Mars. He says, “That it would be awesome to see something that we really don’t understand, but I hope that they don’t charge millions of dollars for it though.” I followed it up by asking him about the HyperLoop. He told me “It’s a great idea, but they shouldn’t rush it just for some publicity.”
SpaceX is on the path to change our lives drastically if they are able to hit on some of their plans, whether it is building a super train that is able to take you from the Bay to LA in 30 minutes, or being able to drop off us on the Big Red Planet.
