The San Jose Sharks play tough, physical games, but outside of the sport, they are really caring towards their community.
They help out the community through an organization called The Sharks Foundation. The organization includes multiple programs all towards helping kids. The mission statement that the The Sharks Foundation is dedicated to is to help enhance the lives of youth and families in the community with an emphasis in the areas of character, education, health and safety.
One of The Sharks Foundation’s programs is called the 50/50 raffle where during the hockey games, the audience can decide if they want to buy tickets. During the third period, they announce the winning ticket. The winner gets half of the winning jackpot and the other half goes to a beneficiaries in the Bay Area. There is another program called “Goals For Kids” and basically every time a Sharks player scores a goal, $1,000 is donated to the local organization dedicated to help the people in need. The organization also accept grants where they can donate up to $50,000 for supporting programs and $100,000 for projects.
Some other things that this organization did to help out the community is resurfacing a school’s blacktop, so that the kids can learn about hockey while staying active. In 2014, the Sharks Foundation helped fund the redesign of a pediatric floor at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center to create a new women’s and children’s center. With the partnership with SAP, they donated over $750,000 over a three year period. They also helped fund the creation of the Rotary PlayGarden, which allows the kids to run and play, learn, discover and explore.
In an interview with Jon Root, he told me that the players play an essential part in event activation. There’s a wide range of current players and alumni that participate and assist in Sharks foundation events.
He says that each month has a specific theme and sector of the community they would like to impact financially, mentally and physically in a positive way. Every week in some way, shape, manner or form, The Sharks Foundation is assisting the community.
“There are legacy projects being discussed for next year as the all-star game approaches. Very exciting things are in store that will make a huge impact for the San Jose community,” he said
He also told me that “With a program like ‘Goals for Kids,’ over a million dollars has been donated. Via our website, at the conclusion of the 2017-18 season, funds raised through the Goals for Kids program will be split evenly among this year's eight beneficiaries: Jewish Family Services of Silicon Valley, Loved Twice, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Ronald McDonald House Charities Bay Area, Students Rising Above, Victory Ranch, Via Services, Inc. and Youth Science Institute. Millions of lives have been impacted. It’s amazing what the foundation has been able to do with the help of many great partners.”
I think it’s pretty amazing how the Sharks’ are doing community service as they are a pretty big organization, and yet they still care and think about how they can help the community. My opinion on this is that I love it due to how things have been lately with all the mass shootings and all. I think the work matters, of course because they put the time and effort into planning and helping the community.
