The Civil War ended in 1865, but it also marked the beginning of the biggest hatred group in the U.S. called the Ku Klux Klan.
According to encyclopedia.com, the KKK is a group that was created by veterans of the Confederate Army right after the Civil War ended. The KKK was created because they believed that Whites were superior to African Americans and other groups of people of color. Their main goal was to restore white supremacy with violence, such as physically assaulting and lynching many African Americans.
The KKK's primary target was to overthrow the Republican state government during the Reconstruction Era, so they can have absolute white supremacy once again and they didn't want African Americans to be free. They tried to accomplish their goal by using violence against African American Republicans. They hid their identities by wearing robes to intimidate and scare their victims.
Nowadays, we have seen racism more often involving this group. According to Los Angeles Times, in Anaheim, there was a small group of KKK members who decided to protest and represent their klan. Counter-protesters attacked the KKK members, resulting in 3 KKK members stabbed and 13 people arrested.
In Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017, a white nationalist rally turned into a deadly one when James Alex Fields Jr, a member of Vanguard America and a white supremacist group, decided to ram his car into counter-protesters. Alex killed a 32-year-old woman and also injured 19 counter-protesters.
In a survey at Yerba Buena High School, 11 people said that they are really concerned when asked how they feel about the KKK being more visible and 16 said they are somewhat concerned. When asked if they believe Donald Trump has contributed to the rises of rallies and marches by the white supremacists, 17 people said that they think that he has contributed a lot, while 11 people believed that he has somewhat contributed to the situation.
After interviewing John about the KKK, he says, “it's scary knowing that they are being seen more often.”
He then said that when he was younger he experienced many different types of racisms. “I got called a ni**** and a slave.”
Racism has been evident since slavery began. From the KKK to today's racist groups, we have seen the KKK being more visible, along with groups such as the neo-Nazis, White nationalists, racist skinheads, and even anti-muslims.
