Families are being torn apart. Men, women, and children are dying. People who don’t have money, such as the homeless, can’t even leave for their own safety or be sheltered because they don’t have the money or a home. All of this destruction, pain, and loss of family members are due to natural disasters such as hurricanes and fires.
Hurricanes are scary for everyone, and many people might not know what to do during these natural disasters.
As a student at Yerba Buena High school, I decided to interview an AP Environmental Science teacher named Mr. Khong. As a result, I received good answers from Khong.
“Hurricanes are storms that feed on heated waters from the Atlantic Ocean,” said Khong.
“Climate change is the reason why hurricanes form because they are being fed by warm waters. Despite all these hurricanes, hurricane season is not over just yet,” says Khong.
According to Mr. Khong, land-based glaciers are melting due to the increase of surface temperature. Because of this problem, there will be fresh water in the ocean. This means that this can potentially disrupt the salinity of the oceans, and can potentially disrupt ocean systems. Also, the influx of water will cause sea levels to rise worldwide, causing flooding to happen during hurricanes.
Recently, there has been some really strong hurricanes going on, for example, Irma, Maria, and Ivan. All these hurricanes have been categorize 5, which is the strongest a hurricane can be. Many people lost their lives and homes because of these hurricanes.

Another natural disaster that is having an impact on our environment and on mankind are wildfires. According to CNN, “3 large fires between 9 and 11 p.m on October 8 started ripping into neighborhoods when many residents started to go to bed. Most of Northern California is burning. 31 people have been pronounced dead and over hundreds of people are missing.”
The smoke of the fires is hurting our environment and people. The smoke is made up of a complex mixture of gases and fined particles when wood and other organic metals melt.
Fires and hurricanes are terrifying, especially when most people don’t know what to do when either disaster is near.
People should always be prepared for disasters like these. For hurricanes, make an emergency plan: buy supplies like food, water, flashlights etc.
Whereas for fires, you should leave the area, plan ahead, and make sure you choose downhill routes when evacuating. All of these things can help you prepare for a hurricane and a fire.
