The Google Village that is to be built in downtown San Jose intends to provide thousands of jobs for the city. However, it can potentially remove current families that struggle with rent. Many support the Google Village because of its potential and others oppose it because of its negative effects.
The village will bring a lot of people into the city of San Jose. People looking to work at the new Google village will surely take this opportunity. However, this will be bad thing for a city that already has a housing shortage with really high housing prices. This will affect a lot of low income families. Depending on the increase some families might have to move out of the city.
According to an article on Mercurynews.com by George Avalos, in a poll of 431 registered voters in the Santa Clara County, 79% supported Google’s plans to bring about 20,000 jobs to the city. However, 16% opposed it, while the majority of these voters supported these plans, not everyone did. In fact, there was protesters who were looking to stop the development of the village.
The main reason for some people opposing the Google Village is because it will worsen the housing shortages and prices. According to zillow.com, “The median home value in San Jose is $1,078,300.” There are people in San Jose that would want to keep housing affordable but many also want more jobs to come to the city. Cities like San Francisco have already seen crazy increases, it makes sense why people would want to avoid the same fate as neighboring cities.
Pablo M. is a resident in the city of San Jose and he believes that the village will be a good addition to the city. Pablo says the Google Village belongs in San Jose because other cities in California, such as San Francisco or Los Angeles, are already “full.”
As you may know Los Angeles has the largest population in California, so in a way it is full and the Village wouldn’t really help with the housing problems people face. As for San Francisco, it has some of the highest housing prices in the state, the Village also wouldn't belong here. “I support the village because of the amount of jobs it will provide, I’m sure a lot of people will be able to take advantage of these opportunities,” he says.
Carlos is a high school student in San Jose, California. His parents sometimes struggle to pay off rent. Carlos says that he has known about the Google Village and is aware of the effects it will have, which is why he opposes it. “I have some friends who will likely move out if the rent becomes too high,” he says. He is afraid the jumps in rent will cause his parents to move out of the city.
The city of San Jose has already agreed on the prices for the government-owned properties Google plans on buying, and while it’s not confirmed, it is a big step for Google. The Google Village might come sooner than later, and and some of its effects will be evident right away while others might take time.
