Waking up with the fear of going to school everyday was the case for Yerba Buena High School student Trinh Cao.
Many years ago, she experienced bullying at the age of 9 and had spent her elementary years scared and afraid to go to school.
She would get bullied because she had just came back from Vietnam and didn't speak English fluently like others did.
When she was bullied, it made her feel unsafe: “I felt scared and was afraid to even go to school because I didn’t want to get beat up.”
She had to deal with her bullies alone and sometimes even get beat up and had no one to be by her side. Trinh was starting to lose hope in having friends by her side to protect her. She was also losing confidence that she had about herself.
Later on she had found two friends who stuck by her side. They had her back and stuck up for her when no one else did.
“I had seen them once from far away defend me when I wasn’t next to them and I realized they had my back from that moment,” she said.
She started to have two friends by her side that had her back when no one else did, but when her friends wouldn’t go to school it would be bad for her since the bullies would go bully and beat her up.
“I didn't tell anyone, I was quiet about it,” she said. She never told anyone because of how afraid she was to even speak up.
She would just get beat up and bullied but never told a teacher or parent so she just dealt with it alone unless if her friends were there they would scare away the bullies.
Days and years continued to pass as she entered middle school. Now thats where she got her confidence back because she found even more friends that loved her and showed her to love herself.
She stopped getting bullied by that time because she joined volleyball, which helped her find herself and now she doesn't get bullied.
“[That experience] helped me know bullying is not okay because it’s a sad feeling and it can cause suicide, but I was strong enough and it helped me know to never bully anyone no matter what,” she says.
She didn't just grow from it but she also learned to never bully because no one ever wants to go through that situation.
