The United States is supposed to be the “land of the free” and “home of the brave.” But how about our undocumented immigrants? They aren't free to do anything; they always have to worry about ICE and deportation.
Undocumented immigrants don't feel at home knowing they are not wanted by some individuals. If the United States is about freedom then why do we trap innocent immigrants in prisons from ICE.
All they want is to come and get better jobs to provide for their family and let their children have a good future and not be struggling like them. They immigrate for those specific reasons not to just come and mess around over here. They come for a better life and a better future for their kids.
“I want people to know if they come into the U.S. illegally they’re getting out,” said President Trump.
That's the case for my godmother, Susana, she came into the U.S. illegally and later on got deported. She had been in the U.S. for almost 12 years.
She was in the process of getting papers because her husband had recently fixed that problem for himself so he was now going to help my godmother.
While in the process of her trying to fix her documents she was detained after being in the U.S. for 12 years. She didn’t even know why she got detained all she could think of was maybe they had been watching her for a while.
This deportation came unexpectedly to her because she never thought it would happen to her. At the time she was getting detained she didn't believe it because it all felt like a bad dream to her.
While she was being detained all she could think of was her family. Since she wasn't with them while she was getting detained all she could think about was what will happen to them.
“Mi familia es lo más importante de mi vida y a ese momento pensé que los perdí,” said Susana. [Translation: my family is the most important thing in my life and at that moment I had thought I lost them]
Susana’s family was the only thing that mattered to her at the moment. She was afraid of losing her family because she thought they wouldn't know she was getting deported.
“Regresar a México fue difícil, especialmente porque tuve que dejar atrás a mi familia y saber que estaba pasando por esto sola y sin tener ellos a mi lado.” said Susana [Translation: leaving back to mexico was hard especially since I had to leave my family behind and knowing I was going through this alone and not having the by my side]
Being away from family isn't easy for anyone. No one desires to be separated from their family.
According to an article titled “Trump administration weighs new family-separation effort at border” from washingtonpost.com, in a raid that happened in 2018, it had left at least 2,500 children without their parents. Their parents were detained and later on got deported.
Those kids suffered as much as my godmother’s kids did. Even though they still had their dad it was hard for them. They needed both parents as much as one of the kids that lost their parents in any raid.
Susana’s kids were suffering without her presence. Not having your parents by your side is hard. It is hard because parents are supposed to be there and take care of their kids but Susana wasn’t there for her kids when she was being detained.
Her oldest child would always have her at his soccer games and she couldn't go anymore and he was really upset about that. While her youngest was only one year old, he always wanted to be around his mom but he couldn't be around his mom because she wasn't there.
It has been months without my godmother seeing her kids because she was in Mexico while they were here in the U.S. As time kept passing by her husband decided to move over there so they could all be together.
But not everyone gets the chance to reunite with their family as they did. Many kids go to a detention center or even foster care.
According to a Yerba Buena High School student Genesis, she also lost her aunt to deportation which it was tough for her because she was close to her aunt.
Losing her aunt affected her a lot she started being anti-social and very quiet at school and at home.
She isn’t the only one to lose a family member, she isn’t alone in this situation. The only real reason why so many of us keep losing family members is because they are undocumented immigrants.
According to an article titled “Trump administration weighs new family- separation effort at border,” from washigntonpost.com, approximately 38% of migrant families were separated in August of 2018.
There is nothing wrong with undocumented immigrants but president Trump wants all undocumented immigrants out of the US. He thinks undocumented immigrants are bad people that do drugs and take part in gangs, when in reality they come to the U.S just for a better jobs in order to provide their family.
According to an article titled “Trump defends ICE raids: they have to be removed from the country,” from CNN Wire, Trump claims millions of migrant families will be deported.
Genesis lost her aunt not to long ago, months to be specific and it's still affecting her. Losing a family member to deportation is hard for anyone that goes through it.
She changed and wasn't the same after losing her aunt. She couldn't find a way to get better until she talked to her mom about how she felt. Once she did she felt much better but was still hurting a little.
“I love my aunt and it has been hard for me without her here by my side, she used to be my go-to person and now I can even see her,” said Genesis.
Genesis just wished none of this was happening because she loves her aunt and she doesn't want anyone else to go through what she did. However, she can't do anything about it but hope for the best.
“Knowing this is what's happening to many kids out there hurts me because I can't imagine how they are suffering especially if their young kids not knowing what's going on,” said Genesis.
Many people who support Trump agree that undocumented immigrants should get deported back to where they came from. On the other hand, some mayors spoke out about the raids and support the immigrant families.
In an article titled “trump defends ice raids: the have to be removed from the country” from CNN Wire San Francisco mayor London Breed said, “It's unconscionable that the federal administration is targeting innocent immigrant families with secret raids that are designed to inflict as much fear and pain as possible.”
As we can see even some mayors disagree with what Trump is doing but they can’t stop him so all they do is be there for those who are undocumented. They can't stop him due to the fact that he is the president and he is bigger than the mayors.
We can't do much about this situation all we can do is hope that it doesn't happen to anyone in our families that are undocumented immigrants.
Undocumented immigrants get treated unfairly, this is supposed to be the “land of the free and the home of the brave” yet it isn't home to the undocumented immigrants.
Immigrants are left in poverty and violence, yet they don’t get the freedom they worked for. They just want to feel accepted but that isn't being accomplished by our president.
