Some people tend to worry about others before worrying about their own well being. Believing that they can make others happy, but in reality, you can’t. The only person that can make you truly happy is you. That’s why you should be your number one priority.
Selfishness and self care are two very different things. Being selfish is when you take from others to satisfy your needs. While self care is replenishing your resources without taking from others.
When you’ve helped yourself, whether that be having alone time or focusing on what’s important to you, the weight on your shoulders disappear. You’ll be a happier person, giving the best output to helping the people you care about.
While focusing on other people, the problems that are hurting you most are put aside. Eventually dragging you into a place of unhappiness. If you’re not going to take care of yourself then who will?
After years of worrying about the people in my life, it started to take a toll on me. Everything that I needed to do, and all of my issues, were put aside. I started to realize all the things that were happening around me, and I broke down.
One late night, I was on a phone call with my cousin. He told me that he was worried that I would get taken advantage of, knowing that I would do anything to make someone happy.
He made me realize that I was always doing things for other people, and not for myself. I was unhappy with how I handled things and began to put my life back together.
I spent some time focusing on myself and dealt with things that were hurting me. The pressure and anxiety that I had been experiencing, was soon gone. As I was happy and was comfortable where I stood.
When you take care of yourself, you bring out your best version for the people you care about.
On that note, don’t try to help others, until you’ve helped yourself.
