Earth has been going through a major change in climate that affects our environment and community. However, the causes of this problem are both natural and unnatural. What if I told you that we, humans, are a big portion of global climate change? Our planet will cease to extinction if we’re not acting fast to change our actions and to help mitigate our situation.
Global climate change is across the planet. It is happening everywhere, at this very second. According to the article, “Climate Change Evidence: How Do We Know?” from NASA, states that Earth’s average temperature has risen 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit ever since the 19th century. The temperature has been the warmest on record over the past 35 years, with the five warmest years taking place ever since 2010.
Global climate change affects our community and environment. A major effect produced by this problem is extreme weather. Extreme weathers include earthquakes, hurricanes, droughts, rising sea levels and more.
A most recent disaster from the weather as Hurricane Dorian. Going 183 miles per hour in the Bahamas, it caused around 400,000 people to have no power in Nova Scotia, referring to NASA.
There are many factors contributing to global climate change. One contributor is factories/industries, that we the people have created. Factories produce greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, nitrous oxide, methane, and ozone. As a result, the gases go up into our atmosphere. Too much greenhouse gases in our atmosphere causes Earth to “trap” more heat, therefore causing more warmth for our planet.
“I believe that the business community needs to think broadly,” stated Mr.Khong, an AP environmental science teacher in Yerba Buena highschool. “I think people need to understand that, right now, the United States in the developed world made this huge mess, they industrialized.”
On the other hand, global climate change is also natural. It’s going to happen with or without humans but climate change is happening faster because of humans, Mr.Khong mentioned. With our on-going actions of increasing global climate change, we won’t be able to reverse it.
Despite the cause and effects, there are some solutions to help mitigate the situation.
“I think number one is awareness. We have to educate people, we have to tell the people ‘Yes, you matter,’ because all the little things you do in your daily life will matter if everybody does it,” Mr.Khong states. “The thing isn’t to make people feel bad, the thing is to get people to feel like they can do small, little things, add it together and that’ll lead to a bigger change.”
Tammy, a junior at Yerba Buena High School, agrees. “Schools need to talk more about the environment and how to care for it! The sooner the education, the better we can save/care for the planet.”
“Global climate change is a big problem. Health, both humans and nature are in danger. I definitely think global warming is not getting enough attention- it’s getting worse everyday with not much being done, and if we don’t take bigger action soon it’ll be irreversible,” Tammy concludes.
Global climate change is becoming a bigger problem as we speak. If we don’t step up to help lower the toxicity of this planet we will never live to see the future.
