As a child, Estelito Meneses moved a lot and had to make new friends constantly. Playing video games with his friends that he had left behind brought them closer together.
Estelito also plays video games in his house with his brother, Rei.
Video games help him create and be himself. They help him be a better person.
“I feel like it makes me a better person, a better version of myself. I care more about people and animals,” says Estelito.
“For example, I know this sounds funny, but when I play Minecraft and take care of the animals that are included in the game it makes me more patient and sympathetic,” he says.
Video games also teach him that “If you make the wrong decision it impacts your life in a negative way,” he says.
Video games also help him make decisions by himself: “Being able to choose when it comes to a hard decision, for example if I were to choose between two people like my friend Andy and Kevin, I would choose Andy because he makes me laugh and supports me more. On the other hand, Kevin also supports me,” he says.
“Video games reconnect me with my old friends—the friends that I left behind in my other school. WhenI turn on my PS4, I see that my old friend is playing. I join in and start playing the game with him,” Estslito says. “When I see that he is playing it reminds me of when we would talk about soccer and we would play soccer together before school started and during recess.”
He only remembers that specific friend because he was special to him.
“When I was not in a good mood or I just didn’t feel well my friend would try to comfort me and make me laugh, I don’t remember much about him, but something I do remember is him always making me laugh a lot, he would make jokes to bring my spirit up,” says Estelito.
“Whenever I see that my friend from my old school is playing video games it reminds me that he would always try to make me laugh during my hard times and play soccer together during the good times.”
