For many, losing a loved one only brings burdens, but for Brendan Huynh, a Yerba Buena Highschool junior, the death of his grandparents brought growth within. Although the death of his grandparents brought grief and sadness, it ultimately made him more independent.
For the most part Brendan spent most of his time with his grandparents, while his parents were busy at work. His grandmother’s name was Nuoi, and his grandfather’s name was Son.
As the years went by Brendan began to form a close relationship with his grandparents, almost as if they were his others parents.
“I was really close with them, I saw them everyday, I lived with them, they were like next door to me,” says Brendan.
Brendan recalls the moments he shared with both his grandparents, but he more vividly recalls those moments he shared with his grandfather.
“So when I was a kid I had a bike, me and my friends all had bikes and we would run around the neighborhood but like one day my grandpa..like sometimes I would also ride my bike around with my grandpa too around the neighborhood and like I remember one day I think it was like a month after he got surgery he wanted to go ride a bike with me because we always did it. I told him to stay home but he said no no no despite getting surgery he wanted to ride a bike with me.”
But like many things in life those memories came to an end. Brendan’s grandfather passed away due to liver cancer in his house during Brendan’s seventh grade of school. During his freshman year of high school Brendan’s grandmother Nuoi passed away in the hospital.
At such a young age the loss of a loved one can often come as a shock. Brendan experienced this shock after finding out his grandfather had passed away.
Due to the shock Brendan was unable to react to the whole thing. He didn’t comprehend what to do at that moment. Now that he recalls the incident he begins to realize he really felt lonely.
“At first because I was a kid I didn’t know how to react but when I look back at it like...I felt lonely because I knew he was never going to come back,” he says.
The death of Brendan’s grandmother was more recent than the death of his grandfather, thus he had a better understanding of the whole situation. The loss of his grandmother was far heavier than that of his grandfather because he really began to understand that he could no longer be able to see either of them.
“I began to feel more lonely after my grandma passed away because she was like another mother to me”
As painful as it was to lose both of his grandparents, Brendan felt like he was able to positively grow from this experience.
After his grandparents death Brendan felt like he had to be more independent, after all he no longer had the ability to rely upon his grandparents.
Although he no longer held the presence of his grandparents besides him the lasting memories he shared with them live on in his mind and heart.
