There are about 20 to 30 million slaves in the world today. According to the U.S Department, 600,000 to 700,000 people are trafficked across the border every year and 68% are women and children.
Human trafficking has been happening worldwide every year. This topic is important for the YB community as human trafficking is fairly common in the US and we all could be at risk of being the next victim.
Thinkprogress.org states that 293,000 American children are at risk, majority being girls. They also state how people are abducted or lured by the traffickers, who then routinely rape and beat them into submission and are sometimes branded by them.
Arkofhopeforchildren.org talks about how 2 out of 3 children victims are girls and 1 is a boy. The gender and age profile of the victims are: 59% women, 14% men, 17% girls and 10% are boys. 50% are children and 2 million are subjected to prostitution in the global commercial sex trade.
According to dosomething.org, the average cost of a slave is $90, which means each person who gets trafficked is normally sold around $90. Approximately 80% is sexual labor and 19% is forced labor. The average age a teen enters the sex trade is 12 to 14, and they are mostly runaways who were sexually abused as children. 14,500-17,500 people are trafficked into the U.S each year.
