One evening I was watching my daily dose of YouTube, the video was nothing but jokes. When I went to the comment selection of the video, to see people’s opinion on the video since I thought it was entertaining.
Nothing but positive comments until I saw it: a hate comment saying stereotypical stuff and claiming unreal facts about the younger generations like how they make more problems in the world and don't do anything the help out. I tried to brush it off like another hate comment, but it just kept bugging me.
I soon started ranting about it online and to my brothers but I didn’t feel like I was being heard, I wanted to show people the facts and the lies about Gen Z, Ok boomer is like the revenge to their stereotyping.
Thus, a few days later, when my teacher said we are writing a topic on something in the world affecting people since I was already heated on the topic I thought boomers! And immediately started writing, and now you have this story.
The words, “okay boomer” started gaining popularity on an app you’ve probably heard a thousand times by now, Tik Tok. But before we go any further, you have to understand what the term “Okay boomer” means. Some people say ok Boomer refers to mentality. Which is why you see it being used towards people of all ages. Others say
It was a slang phrase used by younger people to dismiss out-of-touch arguments from their elders since the older generation thinks they're better and don't do anything wrong. But now it has evolved to something else, another way you can use ok Boomer is when your friends say something dumb you can use the term.
However, certain news articles adage that ok, boomer is “the new N-word of ageism.”
A Radio host named Bob Lonsberry took to Twitter saying, "Boomer is the n-word of ageism. Being hip and flip does not make bigotry ok, nor is a derisive epithet acceptable because it is new.”
This struck a lot of controversy with Lonsberry’s twitter, it was so massive in the twitter community that Dictionary.com responded to Lonsberry saying, "Boomer is an informal noun referring to a person born during the baby boom, especially one born in the U.S. between 1946 and 1965. The n-word is one of the most offensive words in the English language."
The Media and uneducated people try to make a big deal out of “ok boomer,” putting race into everything but in reality, it has nothing to do with race. Hating on young people is nothing new; it goes back as far as the 4th Century BC.
According to Quartzy, “[Young people] are high-minded because they have not yet been humbled by life, nor have they experienced the force of circumstance…They think they know everything and are always quite sure about it.”
Quartzy also states, “…a fearful multitude of untutored savages… [boys] with dogs at their heels and other evidence of dissolute habits…[girls who] drive coal-carts, ride astride upon horses, drink, swear, fight, smoke, whistle, and care for nobody…the morals of children are tenfold worse than formerly.”
This has been going on for many years and sadly it still affecting us today.
I asked Noah a friend of mine a few questions about how he felt about the older generation constantly criticizing Gen Z. He said: “ It sucks that older people say stuff like ‘oh they’re lazy there dumb there this and that’, why can’t they just say something good for once? Teens have to go through a lot of things like low self-esteem, people being fake, social problems, family problems, etc. It also doesn't help that my mom believes this." Noah said.
“This just adds more to the fire of not being good enough," he insists.
I followed up with, why do you think they hate younger generations? What he said next was breathtaking.
"Change….. people don't like change, no one wants to change not even you, even if you think you do, deep down you know you don't, it’s just human nature. I can't even blame boomers for thinking that way, yeah maybe they can be a little bit nicer but every new generation thinks they're better, you probably do as well. Like you said, it's been happening for years, why would this next year be any different than the next? We are most likely going to hate the younger as well, we are going to become the next boomers, don't believe me go ask a teenager what they think about the younger generation you will be surprised."
Noah respond was great but I wanted more opinions on this topic, so I decided to talk to Noah's mom about it since she dislikes the younger generation and the way they do things.
I asked her the same questions as I did to Noah, about how she feels about the older generation constantly criticizing Gen Z and she said "I think that's what the younger kids think, they think that older people are out to get them but they're not. Gen Z thinks they have it bad, but try being an adult and I bet you that's going to be Nothing but Middle school drama."
Since it wasn't exactly the question I asked, I decided to ask her something else. I told her what her thoughts on the word Ok boomer, she responded with "baby boomers?"
I explain to her what the term was and went off. "Of course, they're so disobedient and would call them names since they obviously have no respect for older folks. They don't have facts to back up their claims and just rely on insults." At this point, I felt uncomfortable and wanted to leave but I power through it and asked her one last question.
Yet, are teenagers actually lazy? If this is just a stereotype made by older generations?
She believes, “As much as I want that to be true, I know they’re not going to, most teens just obsesses over things that are not important and they really don’t care about these things, maybe that’s why we have this current president.”
I sure got a lot of answers to what I wanted, even some biased ones about how teens are not helping the world, but some teens are helping make the world a better place.
Jimmy, a YouTuber that goes by the name “Mr. Beast,” is trying to help plant 20 Million trees by January 1st, 2020. One dollar equals one tree planted, but he’s not doing it alone; millions of people (mainly teenagers) are helping by donating money to https://teamtrees.org. We currently planted 16 million trees and need your help, anything helps even if it’s 1$.
A few big people like Elon Musk are helping as well, he planted one million trees. Even the country of Ukraine, Pewdiepie, Jeffree Star, Alan Walker, Tobi Lutke and Susan Wojcicki the CEO of Youtube, but most importantly the kind teenage followers who are helping out the plant! (Also, please help us prove to these boomers that are generation can actually do something!)
In conclusion, it’s okay to criticize someone/something but if it gets to the point where it’s not criticizing any more and you’re just blindly hating on someone/something then there’s a problem. We have the power to stop this, but that’s only if YOU are willing to.
