Finding a sense of independence, pride, great work ethic, and empathy can take a lifetime. Kevin Nguyen, a great kid, has undergone certain life challenges that can crack most, overcame them and retaliated against it to become the great young man he is today.
Kevin's life can be compared to a rollercoaster, from highs to lows, he has been able to withstand it all. In 2007, Kevin's father, Xuan Nguyen passed away due to stomach cancer. However, Kevin was still a child when he passed away, so he did not understand what had happened.
Over time, as he got older and wiser, he became more understanding of the situation and he thought about it more. With those thoughts came sadness, as any human being would feel. He said, “It made me think about how my life would be with my dad, like how different I would be as a person.”
Losing his father wasn’t the end of him however; he persevered through the thoughts that he went through him and became the best version of himself.
His mom, after living alone with Kevin for while was dating again too. She met Son when Kevin was in the fifth grade and he became his step-father. When Son came into his life he was happy.
Kevin says, “I was happy when he came into my life because I knew my mom would be happy.” He played a major influence in Kevin’s life and even got him into football. Kevin also likes Son’s favorite team, The New Orlean Saints.
Kevin said, “He got me into football and I ended up liking The Saints, my favorite player is on that team too.”
Kevin started playing video games and sports, trying hard in his academics as well. He said, “I always tried my best for him (his father), I wanted to be the best version of myself for him.”
This experience and all of the hard work has shaped Kevin into an intelligent and independent person, he said, “I would have to help my mom in stuff because it was just her and I and usually, I would be by myself most of the time.”
We as humans have to learn that with love comes pain and with pain comes discipline, Kevin was able to learn this at an early age. He did not let the passing of his father mold the kind of person he is today.
Kevin is now doing phenomenally, he has a badass computer set-up, he’s playing his favorite sport, and he has just started high school, arguably the best time of anyone's life.
He’s a proud, confident, and great young man and he will be an amazing person in life. Kevin stated, “I’m gonna be great in life, I’m gonna work hard and live my life the way I want to.”
