Animals are critical to our being, whether we want to believe it or not. They are vital to the ecosystem, without them, the world would practically end. But are they as intelligent as the media makes them out to be? Surely animals that live in their own feces and eats piles of corn each day couldn’t be smart, right? They’re just animals, how evolved could their mind possibly be?
Chickens are a regular meal for some people, a delicately in many countries. People don’t treat chickens with much care, often discarding their livelihood without a second thought. According to onegreenplanet.org, chickens were found to have a powerful mind. They can even solve very complex communication systems and can understand cause and effect. They can count, show a level of self-awareness and can even remember their favorite type of food.
Cows are also something many people enjoy eating, provided with necessary nutrients as well as how luxurious a piece of steak can be. According to onegreenplanet.org, cows are affectionate as well as emotional. They exhibit curiosity, can communicate well and protective over their family. Just like humans, cows have shown to possess a level of anxiety.
Pigs are playful, they love to run around and to be able to roam freely to explore their surroundings. My friend Katherine said, “Animals are hella complex. They feel just like us. I used to have a piglet that would cry everyday at 2pm exactly. That’s just crazy to me.”
Shocking enough, they’re the 4th most intelligent animal. Pigs have been known to be used for their powerful snout at hunting down truffles. Yet, they are still portrayed as a lower intelligence.
So why are we still stuck in the belief that farm animals are dumb or less evolved than humans? Katherine said, “A lot of people don’t know how smart animals are. Like dogs for instance, they’re an animal and smart, so why aren’t we eating them?”
She made a valid point, why aren’t we eating foods that aren’t perceived dumb? It’s where food and the rights to an animal is crossed against a brim line. Each animal has their own level of intelligence, whether it’s small, they have a level of sensitivity and emotions.
Personally, animals are intelligent but I wouldn’t say they have the same level of intelligence like humans. They’re still animals, as their mind hasn’t evolved as much as the human mind has. But they can still feel emotions just like we can, it is almost like a replica of ourselves, just not as evolved.
Although animals are seen as just food or pets, they’re so much more than that. Their intelligence is something that shouldn’t be underappreciated. Animals’ minds are evolved enough to feel emotions, experience anxiety, can even solve complex solutions, yet a strong stima still surrounds them. They are intelligent beings, who deserve a much better reputation than just being dumb creatures that their sole purpose is to be eaten.
