Every year kids are being killed and injured due to school shootings in the U.S. This is a national issue that is ongoing, and they need to stop. Yet, why doesn’t the U.S have stricter gun laws compared to others countries?
According to Saeed Ahmed and Christina Walker in an article for CNN in 2018, there have been 23 school shootings in the U.S. So far 400 students have died due to school shootings. There have been 288 school shootings in the United States since 2009. This number is likely to increase if we do not produce stricter laws to protect students and teachers from shootings in the U.S.
According to Monique Scotti, in a Global News article, ”The absence of a large cohort of Americans who want stricter gun control laws and are passionate enough to show up in great numbers to support candidates who feel the same is one big reason why the laws don’t change,” Lee explained.
The numbers of school shootings have increased most likely to the reasoning that students are getting bullied and harassed. Teachers and staff have not been doing their jobs to protect these students that are getting bullied, or from self-harm, committing suicide. Teachers aren’t checking in with students and making sure they are okay.
According to How teachers Help Students with Mental Health Disorders, “They can educate themselves and others on the symptoms of mental health issues, provide a safe environment, encourage good health, and help students access mental health resources.”
Glenn Geher, a professor of psychology at the State University of New York at New Paltz, states, "Mental health problems have been skyrocketing" in our nation from the past few decades."
April Mendez, a sophomore student at Yerba Buena High School, says that students with mental health disorders should have some form of therapy: “Students born with mental health disorder should get treated right away because it’s important for their health.”
In my opinion school shootings are a very dangerous ongoing thing that needs to be stopped. Everyday parents are losing their loved ones such as their daughters and sons due to the massive amount of school shootings increasing. If someone shows signs that they’re going through tough times, you should seek them out and help them, to prevent them from doing something worse later on.
