Having left Mexico, I didn’t have many possessions to remind me of my father, but I took on one of my father’s passion and that is singing.
I remember when I lived in Mexico how much of a hard worker my father was and how much dedication he would put in order for us to have food on the table. He would work multiple jobs and one of those jobs was singing; to just have enough money for food and once in a while go out to eat.
When I sing, it always evokes memories of my father and the times we have spent together. When I sing I do it with emotion because I connect more with my father. There are times where I can’t sing at all because the memories are too vivid for me and I sometimes break down into tears.
A song that I really like, but I haven’t tried to sing is “Lucio Vasquez” by “Antonio Aguilar.” I remember my father always trying to learn that song and always practicing it. It’s a song that I would like to try sometime.
Singing also reminds me of how my father has taught me how to treat others, because my father wanted me to be respectful to others, to always treat others the way you want to be treated. Singing reminds me of my father because when he would also go out of his way to tell me life lessons even though he was working on a song.
Singing has helped me reconnect with my father even though he isn’t present. I hope one day I will be able to visit him in Mexico and tell him how much I missed him.
