For many students, going to school in elementary is fun and easy but that wasn’t the case for Itzel Hernandez. Growing up without a father figure and a struggling single mother shaped her to be independent and responsible for looking after herself and her siblings.
Itzel had a rough beginning from moving to a different country and not having a father figure. Life back in Mexico was much easier and better for me because her family was close together and had few worries. Then they moved to America, which changed it all.
Itzel’s father did not want to come to America with her, and left Itzel and her mother alone.
When Itzel first came to America, she was bullied quite a bit. From being called names, being made fun of, and feeling left out. Life at home wasn’t any better for her because she had a struggling, single mother at home. Having to grow up quick and help her mother watch her siblings caused Itzel to grow independent at a young age.
Itzel at this point felt ‘lonely’ because she didn’t have a father figure to look up to. Which left her feeling sad and wondering why her father didn’t come with her.
Her father to this day is still in Mexico and doesn’t check up on her often. Itzel still has a lot of relatives and family members back in Mexico who she misses a lot.
A role model Itzel looked up to through all this trauma is her mother. Her mother is a strong hardworking single mother who provides for Itzel and her other siblings .
Her life in America is better now than when it first started. Itzel’s family is now financially and mentally stable. She is happy how her family is together and how she now has a responsibility of taking care of her siblings .
Itzel’s plan for the future is to go to a four year college such as UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, and UC San Diego. If Itzel goes to college, she will be the first in her family, which is something she is extremely proud about.
