On November 24, 1991, the world lost rock legend Freddie Mercury. He left a legacy through his music for his friends and millions of people; he will never be forgotten and will live on forever in our hearts.
Freddie Mercury was born Farrokh Bulsara from ZanZibar, Tanzania but later moved to England to attend an all-boys boarding school. In his college years he would go to a local bar with a friend named Tim Saffell who played in a band with Roger Taylor and Brian May. Their band was called Smile. Tim would eventually leave the band and Freddie would take over as lead singer and later changed the band name to Queen. In 1971, John Deacon joined Queen as the new bass player.
In 1973, they released their first album titled “Queen” and in 1974 released “Sheer Heart Attack”. The song “Killer Queen” became a hit. Queen is and always will be remembered for their most popular song “Bohemian Rhapsody” from their album “A Night At The Opera” which was released in 1975. They would later release more albums and one made it to the USA and would become a huge hit titled “Another One Bites The Dust” from the album The Game in 1980.
Freddie was born with 4 extra teeth but never had them removed in fear it would damage his vocals. He was often made fun of for this growing up, and people called him bucky. Freddie once said he’s very different in person than he is when performing; when he performs he’s very confident and outgoing, but in person he’s very shy and not to social.
He had many cats and often would call home to talk to his cats. He even made a song about his cats. Brian said Freddie loved his cats more than he loved most people.
Queen broke off for a while and Freddie would release a solo album in 1985 titled “Mr Bad Guy.” It hit number six in the UK and was on the charts for 23 weeks.
The band would later get back together to perform at the Live Aid event in July 1985. This would be considered to be one of the best performances for years to come. Many famous people have cited Queen’s Live Aid performance as the reason they started to play.
After their performance in Live Aid Queen would release an album titled “A kind of magic” and had a tour called “Magic Tour.” Soon after this, Freddie told the rest of the band he was diagnosed with AIDS. He had known for a while but didn’t want to tell them until he felt ready. After he told them he said he didn’t want anyone else knowing in fear they would buy records and albums in pitty.
In 1987 Freddie released “Barcelona” a song he sang with Montserrat Cabelle and would later be used for the 1992 olympics in Barcelona. Freddie loved opera music so when he got to sing this song he was happy it was with Montserrat, someone he was a huge fan of.
After this Freddie would release a few more albums, his final one being “Innuendo” in 1991. By then his health had decreased: he was very thin and pale. One of his last songs titled “These are the days of our lives” is considered his final goodbye to the fans.
Freddie passed away on November 24, 1991. Soon after his death, news of Freddie’s sexuality of being gay/bisexual was released and later his cause of death being AIDS. Fans would mourn for him and play his music all over the world.
Bohemian Rhapsody would be re-released and stay number one in the charts and many documentaries would be released documenting his life. In 2018, the film Bohemian Rhapsody was released in theaters. It is a biopic of his life and the band Queen. I watched it and highly recommend it film made; it made me tear up.
Although he has passed away, Freddie will never be forgotten. He will live on in our hearts, and he and his music will always be remembered as legendary.
