Emotions are a natural state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others, according to Oxford dictionary.
There’s an expression that says, follow your heart, not your mind, but emotions are fast. Sue Johnson from Psychology Today is an author, researcher, professor, presenter and speaker and one of the leading innovators in the field of couple therapy.
Johnson says, “It takes about 100 milliseconds for our brain to react emotionally and about 600 milliseconds for our brain to think and reach our cortex to react." She said when angry, we can choose to stay calm or overreact, but for some people who are fearful, they might not want to overreact and cause a scene. While other people who overreact might be too loud or speak up for what they believe is right. They might not be as calm.
People with higher empathy regulation can turn it off more easily in specific situations. As I said emotions cannot be chosen. Some are way too powerful.
Some things are meant to be secrets and not to be heard, but emotions can be shown.
We humans have seven basic emotions that we show or sometimes hide them from others. They are happiness, sadness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise, and contempt.
I asked my friend, Lizette Garcia, a Senior at Yerba Buena High School, if she believes if she can change her emotions and she responded with “I believe I can’t change my emotions because it depends on how I feel.”
We all have emotions. They are sort of our game controller since they kinda know what type of humans we think are adorable or attract us. Being attracted to someone is more than just appearance but of course, we can be physically attracted to someone but we are more often drawn to their passion and personality.
Many of us are attracted to different humans. For example, I’m attracted to Calum Hood. Calum Thomas Hood is from Sydney Australia who plays the bassist in the band called 5 Seconds of summer and my friend Jared Garcia is attracted to Zayn Malik. Malik was a former ex-member of one direction but now Zayn is a solo singer expressing his love for music all around the world. We both are attracted to different people, but we don’t hate each other. Not everyone loves the same person. Some people might not be attracted to Hood and some might be. However, other people might not like the same “type” of people I like.
Some people get attracted by the way that person may act, such as having a sense of humor, or maybe they like people with hazel eyes or lighter hair. I feel like many humans might have a preference, but many humans just go for it. A few days ago, I asked a few people if they have some sort of type, and about five out of six people said that they do.
Some prefer people with dark brown eyes and some like people with colored eyes like blue, green or grey. But that one person might not really care about what the person looks like unless they are a sweetheart and respect him and herself. Lizette said, “I prefer people with whitish hair and that are older than me”. While Gio said, “I don’t really care how she looks like. I want someone to make me happy and who will appreciate me not just use me."
I found that very adorable since many people aren't like this anymore. It made me realize that many people are obsessed with society's expectations and don’t want to be themselves anymore.
In conclusion, emotions are some weird helpful things that we all have. Even though we might not always be able to choose our emotions, they show people how we feel, which is pretty cool.
