For the last 16 years, I have never felt as much happiness as I do now. I know i’m late to the “get a dog party,” but I always knew that it was going to take a lot of responsibility, and yet, I still knew i needed the puppy. I heard so much about dogs and how they have a strong bond with the owner. I always wanted a bigger pet instead of a hamster and that day finally came.
February 5, 2018 was the night I was going to get my puppy. I was excited but had to wait until it was 8:30pm, when my dad came home. He drove my mom, my two brothers, and I to Hayward. I was nervous to see these puppies because I was actually going to get one after five years of wishing for one. On the drive to Hayward, I didn’t know what to feel. As we started getting closer i was thinking to myself, was i really ready to get a puppy?
As soon as we arrived, I saw the owner with a brown cardboard box full of puppies. They were so small and playful, it was hard picking just one. But then I saw a creamy one with a small white heart on its forehead. As I picked her up, the cold wind started to blow and she started to shake. I wrapped her in my jean jacket but it was useless. She was frightened to leave, but I just hugged her. Just by looking at her made me love her more than I love 5sos and that is unimaginable. How can someone love a small furry creature so much? How is it even possible? When we got in the car, I looked at her small warm paws. Then I looked at her ears, her fur, and her wet nose. She is so chubby, I thought to myself.
When she first arrived home, she was scared. I looked at her and gave her puppy food. She was shaking and very hungry. She looked like she had never seen food. When we were about to go to sleep, I could hear her crying. I jumped off my bed and went to pick her up. My mom did the same. I told Belle that it was okay and kissed her little head. I named her Belle because she gave me vibes from beauty and the beast and I always loved the way that name sounded.
When I placed her in her bed, she cried all night. Since it was her first day here, I thought she missed her home. But her crying didn’t last just one night. It lasted about three nights. Three nights of being tired made me think twice about this puppy. But the second day, I decided to play with her at around four in the morning. It was just me and her.
Belle makes me feel comfortable. We have developed a special bond, and she even knows my whole schedule. Especially when I'm going to sleep because she hops on my bed and sleeps near me or right next to me. She doesn't want to sleep on her bed anymore.
Whenever I come from school or from anywhere else she wags her tail and does a happy little dance. I feel like dogs are the creatures who honestly are most excited to see humans. Since she is a puppy, she’s more on the exploratory sided.
When I first got my puppy she was 12 weeks. She was born November 30, 2017 and she makes everything better. Without her, I would just be chilling or sleeping. But she gives me a routine, so I always have something to look forward to.
According to Wells on the site Drs.Foster and Smith, he mentions how dogs relax and focus our attention away from problems. They always lift our moods and you also have something to care about in life. At first my dad didn't want a dog. He said, “Well I didn’t want to take care of it.” Nonetheless, he changed his point of view on dogs after a few months. He confessed to me that she changed him a lot. Now he cares for her and takes her places when me and my siblings are at school. “She's like a playful baby,” he says.
Belle has made a big impact these past four months. We even got to celebrate my seventeen birthday last month and she even wanted a cupcake. She gives me a reason to smile. I love how she stops me from feeling sad or from giving up at everything in life. I always hear her little barks when I’m crying. I find it funny how she tries to bark but she can’t bark much. She can’t bark because she’s still young.
People who don’t have dogs don’t understand that love and connection between an owner and pet. Dogs are truly a blessing and I'm thankful that I have her by my side.
