A lot of energy goes into friendships; both passion and pain are needed. 8 year old me wouldn’t have guessed I would of lasted with one person for many years, through many ups and downs.
Estefania Negrete has been my best friend since the second grade. Our friendship was really relaxing since all we did was color books and play on the playground. She was someone I could see myself hang out with since I felt like we connected over zhu zhu pets and bratz. We met during the arts and craft section during lunch. I’m pretty sure she started talking to me because she needed to use the pink paint and then we started talking and hanging out. Little did we know that this was going to last longer than I expected.
We both went to McKinley Elementary School but one day we lost touch because she moved schools and we never had each others number since we were 7-8 years old. We didn’t have phones so that meant we couldn’t text or call each other. Then a few days later my parents relocated to a new place. So I got transferred to a school called Shirakawa and that's when I reunited with her again.
Let’s fast forward to eighth grade. Eighth grade was a wild ride because we were preteens. I asked her what her highlight as a preeteen was and she said “when we used to hang out far by the pine trees and we would leave everyone to go pick up fruits by the preschool. After we got the fruits we used to eat them.” This was our daily thing. Yard duties would always watch us and wait for us to go lineup since we were far away from everybody else.
Eighth grade was when Estefania showed me many things that I didn’t know about such as bands, YouTubers and concerts. My favorite memory was when we went to Great America for our 8th grade graduation trip. I remember going on the Psycho Mouse. All I remember was being buckled while steph was telling me to get ready. As we went up you could feel the fresh air in your face, quickly turned, people screaming and laughing on the ride.
We have many jokes that we share that many people don’t understand and it’s funny because she knows who the better Canadian is but she doesn't like admitted it.. Even though we have our differences we still make them into jokes and laugh about them later. I’m just really thankful I have her to lead the way.
Even though we had different classes we always had time to hang out. I was scared that this was going to be the last time I saw her. Since we were going to graduate soon and high school was coming. As school was ending we had our eighth grade dance and it was so much fun because we played Just Dance, Super Smash and some other games I can’t remember. Me and Estefania waited in line with two other friends to play Mario Karts. While some classmates were taking selfies or watching others play. There wasn’t much of a dance until they played See You Again by Charlie Puth and people started to hug and cry because this was their last time seeing their friends.
I asked her if she thought we were going to last 11 years and she said “Yes it lasted because we’re so good with each other like we talk about everything. If something's bad we talk to each other and I help you decide. Like when you have your problems you talk to me and I give you advice and it's a mutual agreements [ wait..] 5sos you know. [giggles]”
A best friend is someone who brings out the best in you”. In many ways, we are more vulnerable with our friends than we will ever be with our significant others. She’s like an older sister because she gives me advice when I am struggling or need help deciding on what to wear. She’s brings the best of me because I feel comfortable around her and don’t feel like I have to hide anything from her.
As we are about to graduate high school I ask her how did we make it and favorite memory through our four years in high school. She looked at me and said “going to the concert when we first went to see Hey Violet and then 5SOS and another memory I had was when we went to the Great Mall and we bought these cookbooks for strawberries covered with sugar and then we messed it up really bad and then we put too much vanilla extract.”
Growing up with someone you know as kids is wild because she has seen your phases and changes throughout the years. We’re not eight year olds who watch Barney or anything princess related. Okay maybe when there’s something interesting like Ugly Dolls. Estefania said “obviously we all matured we’re not as girly like kinda. [pause] I don’t know we both saw our accomplishment and struggles and that's really good.”
I never expect our bond to last but somehow we made it. Friends are people who boost your happiness and reduce your stress. They can also improve your self-confidence and self-worth and I'm just so thankful to have Estefania as a friend and for everything she has done for me.
