Yerba Buena High School has not undergone major exterior and interior remodeling of its campus buildings since its original opening in 1971. However, for the past six years, the administrative staff has been planning the installation of a new and improved building in the front of the school- a student union.
Tom Huynh, principal of Yerba Buena High School, said the whole process had a slow start, but once the old building was torn down, it went by very fast. The whole building was scheduled to open by the end of June 2018, but as it turns out, we were ahead of schedule.
When you first enter the newly designed student union, a front desk greets you and four study rooms for students to use are to your left. In addition to these rooms, there is also an area supplied with a printer for printing and copying purposes.
Past the front desk, to your right, are both the counseling office along with the attendance office. The new offices will have a more modernized look and not have such an awkward feel since they will be bigger. Teachers' mailboxes and a lounge with an outside patio are located in the back.

In the center of the building, TV monitors are available for students and teachers to use to and hook up to their electronic devices to display their work on a big screen, so you will not have to be huddled around a small computer screen anymore.
There will also be a new lunch area consisting of two salad bars, either a self-serve bar, or if that is not available, the food will be provided to students. There will be two entrances to this new lunch area, also. Right by the cafeteria is a student patio as well as a small fitness area. The ASB classroom is located beyond these areas of the building, along with two other classrooms.
Mr. Huynh expressed how excited he is for this new building to be up and running. “The overall cost was $22.5 million. The reason for this new building is because YBHS has not had a major upgrade since it was first built. And I think it will make the student’s life easier since they will have their own printer and study rooms for group projects or whatever they may be needed for.”
Mr. Sargent Placa, the JROTC teacher, thinks that the new building is great, especially for the students because he believes it’s going to be motivation for the students to do better in school. It’s going to make them feel happier to come to class and see that new building, especially when they go to lunch. He also said that he felt honored while putting the flag on the new building. He is also impressed that the building didn’t take as long as he expected.
YB student Daniel Zamudio said of the new student union: “I’m very excited for this new building because I think that this will bring a lot more school spirit. Also I feel that this will do good for us students since we will have more access with the study rooms and our own printer and copy machine.”
This new student union will bring us together as a school and create a better environment. Many YB students and teachers are very excited for the building to be up and running the incoming 2018-19 school year!
