San Jose, a city in the middle of California, surrounded by tall and gray buildings. Zooming in, you can hear horns from cars on a sunny day. Out in the distance, a school can be seen and the sound of students can be heard, followed by a loud, noisy ring of the bell and you can see and hear children making their way to class on time. Despite it’s time to go to class, some students decided to hang around the campus, not attending their classes. Some students see no point trying and drop out.
High school graduates continue to rise in California in 2018. However, as the number of graduates continues to increase so does that of dropouts. According to cde.ca.gov, “the number of 2018 dropouts totaled 48,453, an increase from 45,052 in 2017, resulting in an increase in the dropout rate from 9.1 to 9.6.”
Back in freshman year, my view on high school students dropout was narrowed. Basically, I thought that students who drop out are weak and couldn’t handle high school. Some of my friends agreed. However, in my sophomore year, my English class helped me realized the truth about our country. That discrimination is still an issue in America and its existence in schools. I learn that not all students drop out because they hate learning and simply give up. Some were forced to give up. It might be because of family issues, relationship issues, or even the school itself.
You might think that dropping out of high school is a bad thing to do. However, there are two different types of dropouts. Those who have been treated wrongly by the school and were forced to drop out, or push out. Not everyone is equal when it comes to school. Students who listen to whatever their teacher say get praised, while students who stand up for themselves get pushed out. The other one is those who willingly dropout to further advance their education.
Some students at Yerba Buena High School agree that one of the reasons for students being pushout is due to the oppressive and unfair school system. A student at Yerba Buena High School named Kennedy voiced his opinion about our school system, “I think that our school system is not really equal based, like, we have inequality in our school system. I think there’s a corruption in our school system.”
To drop out of school mean to stop whatever you are studying, but it does not mean giving up on your life. In fact, some of the most successful people in the world never graduated from high school.
Mark Twain, a major American writer from Missouri in the 1800s and he's the author of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, once said, “Never let schooling interfere with your education.”
Different people have different reasons as to why they want to dropout of high school, based on their personal experience. Maybe because they find their classes to be boring and irrelevant to what they wanted to do in life.
A Yerba Buena student named Jeffrey dropped out of high school during his Junior year to go to a community college. His reason for dropping out was because of the constantly moving around.
“I think it was the fact that I kept moving a lot while I was in high school, so I just got tired of the constant of moving around every semester. So I thought if I could just get done with high school and continue my upper education, it would be easier to stay in one spot because even if I move, I could stay in the same school,” said Jeffery, now in college.
Dropping out isn’t always a bad thing as long as you are able to further your education. Before finding this out, I have always thought dropping out is the worst thing you could do as a student. However, ever since I heard about Jeffrey dropout of high school to go to a community college, my view on high school students dropout has changed yet again, and I’m glad it did.
