Discrimination against women still exists today. In some areas of the globe, young girls and women still don’t have the right to attend school or get an education while men do. As of today, there is not one country where women make more than men. It is unfortunate that men and women are still not being treated equally.
According to Brookings.edu, there are 10 nations around the world that still don’t allow women to get an education, some being; Cambodia, Pakistan, Nepal, and Afghanistan. This impacts young girls and women negatively. Women are presented with less opportunities with no education, meanwhile men are allowed to get an education.
Though the majority of countries now have an equal amount of women as men going to school, it is sad to see that there are countries that still have not changed.

Wages for women have been a known problem. The AAUW research shows that in 2016, women in the United States were paid 80% of what men are paid, and the pay difference will still have its impact 20 years from now. The pay gap has shortened because women have become a larger part of the workforce along with other factors. Progress towards equal pay is slow but it will one day be equal according to statistics.
Miguel, from San Jose, says he has seen discrimination against women since he was younger. “When I was younger, at my school I would always see my teachers pick boys as team leaders,” he says. This is discrimination on a smaller scale but it still impacts the minds of young girls and boys. Boys might get the idea of being superior to their team as a result of being leaders all the time, meanwhile girls might feel inferior. For example, all the past presidents of the United States have all also been male.
As of today, there has not been one female president for the U.S. This is because there are less women politically involved than men. Miguel says this shouldn’t be a problem anymore, however, he believes there are many things slowing down progress towards gender equality. “Patriarchy is an idea that many people live under in any country,” he says. Patriarchy is a system where the male is the head of the family.
Miguel says gender roles and patriarchy might be the biggest reason why we still don’t live in a world where both genders are seen as equal. He also talks about how the idea of gender roles can also make men and women feel entitled to doing certain hobbies or jobs, ”Gender roles become expectations of the people,” he says.
If we want gender equality, it is important to remove the idea of gender roles. Enforcing these roles will only lead to people feeling entitled which will slow down and discourage gender equality.
