There are some people in the world who think women are supposed to do everything from serving men to cleaning after them. I know this because my family have these expectations of me and my sisters.
I had gotten home from work in the afternoon, there was the smell of carne asada in the air. I was ready to eat, but before that, I had to make rice. My brother and cousin came downstairs, sat down, and waited to be served. My mom made a comment while she was serving both my brother and cousin saying, “Damn, it took you this long to start cooking something, well now you can start learning how to cook other stuff.” I responded with, ¨Yeah let’s see when your two boys learn how to serve themselves.” I was pretty upset because I had just gotten home, and I still had to cook and clean while my brother and cousin did nothing all day, but just play Fortnite. It's just unfair and I hate that both of us aren’t treated equally.
I asked my mom, ¨Why don't you tell them to do something productive like help around the house or clean?¨ She responded with, “They are men, women are supposed to do everything around the house. I make you do all those things so you could know and do it for your husband.” I was ready to rant to her about her being sexist and told her I wasn't going to do that for my future husband because we can both do the same things.
Both my sister and I are always having fights with my mom about this. I had a conversation with my sister about the whole situation and she said, ¨It's super annoying. They expect us to clean and let the men do everything they want, they could go out whenever at whatever time they want, but if us girls were to go out late my parents would say it's not okay for ladies to be out that late.¨ I responded, ¨It's better to be 50/50.”
According to planned parenthood.org, “People expect that women will take care of children, cook, and clean the home, while men take care of finances, work on cars, and do home repairs”.
Our parents expect us to clean, cook, and to act like a ‘lady’, as for the guys, they don’t care even if they aren’t doing anything. Everything should be equal around the house.
If people want to serve their husband, or if they think it's right to cook clean and after them, then that's up to them. But for me, I think it should really be equal for both men and women because it sucks being told you are supposed to be a certain way towards men. And according to the website, The Body Language expert, ¨Women choose the rule for themselves.” We should live in a society where both genders are considered the same and no other should be looked down upon.
