Monica was really heartbroken when she found out she was pregnant and her parents told her to abort the baby or else they wouldn't help her in any way. Her boyfriend didn't want to know anything about her or the baby unless she would abort it. She started questioning if it was worth it or if she could even handle everything on her own.
She went and talked to a few friends about the whole situation and they all told her if she ever needed a place to stay, the doors would always be open for her, and they were supportive of whatever she would pick.
A couple weeks passed, Monica then went to the clinic to continue with the abortion, but Monica was really scared because she didn’t want to regret it later in life. She was hesitate, but it didn’t change her mind as she wanted to keep going with the abortion because she wanted to keep studying and continue having a social life.
She knew that having this baby would make big changes in her life, and she really didn’t want that to happen. Her parents wanted her to abort the child because they didn’t want to see her going downhill, especially with a baby by her side.
According to the guardian and ajplus El Salvador is one of the countries where abortion is criminalised, even in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother's life is in danger. Between the years 2000 and 2014, 147 women were charged, including women who have miscarried. Women get penalised for something they didn't ask for and it's really sad.People started protesting the country's total ban on abortions. For almost three decades, abortion under all circumstances was illegal and the punishment was up to 5 years in prison. Even in occasions like this, it shouldn't be illegal and people who aren't ready for a kid should abort it if they want. Abortion needs to be legalised everywhere. &
After Monica’s incident, she experienced a lot of physical pain and mental stress for a couple of months. A few more months passed and she said, “It takes time to forget about it, but it's heartbreaking every time I think about it because I thought my parents were going to be supportive.”
She went back to school, had a social life, traveled, but at times, it would come back to her and she would have breakdown. She would go to therapy to help her get through it. Her parents were happy she attend therapy and was getting the care she needed.
Even though they didn’t support her with having a baby, they just wanted what was best for her because Monica didn’t have a stable place to get any support and didn’t want the baby or her to suffer.
