My parents came to the United States to give my siblings and I a better life, so we could have a good education and a better future. But all those dreams could be destroyed. I can’t imagine a moment where my parents are taken away by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from my siblings and me. I could already hear myself yelling and crying.
According to a study at www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org, Latino citizen children from 2013- 2015 found that they had post-traumatic stress disorder, this is a condition that causes anxiety and flashbacks triggered by traumatic events. This can impact many people but especially to young ones, they can have lack of sleep by just thinking about the situation such as seeing their parents getting detained or deported.
As the oldest of my siblings, my parents have given me a huge responsibility. They tell me that if one day they get deported, I’m in charge of my little sister and my brother. This stresses me out because in that situation I’d be really scared. I wouldn’t know what to do.
According to www.politifact.com, during Donald Trump’s inauguration, from Jan. 20th, 2017 to Sep. 30th, 2017, 143,470 deportations were made. 150,000 children have been separated by their parents who are undocumented.
When Mexican immigrants are deported, they are sent to Tijuana, a very unsafe place with many gangs. From Tijuana they go their own way depending from what state they belong to in Mexico such as Oaxaca, Jalisco, Michoacán and many more. My dad, Angel Sumano, says that he would prefer to be deported instead of his wife. “I’d die if one day your mom gets deported and something bad happens to her in Tijuana,” my dad claims.
My parents are really worried, as a family we have been making plans. We are saving up money just in case anything happens. We have every document, such as our IDs and passports. My parents are getting help from my grandma who is getting all documents and money to build a house, if anything we would have a shelter out there to stay.
Since I’m the oldest I have the responsibility to take care of my younger siblings, mostly my four-year-old sister. This would be hard for me because it would lead me to take a huge step to adulthood, mostly when I still act like a child. My brother, who is 14, can help me out with her, but we would still feel empty without our parents.
We’re not that connected with our family members, so we wouldn’t get that much help. There’s lack of communication in our family and it’s bad because in this situation, relatives is our first option to go to so we could be safe.
But if anything, I won’t let that fear get the best of me.
