What is depression? Well, depression is a serious issue and it can destroy your life in just 5 seconds. It can even take someone’s life if they don’t get the help that they need. Depression is basically a monster in your head. Sometimes it can be as small as an ant or it can be as big as a bear. When it does turn into a bear, it’s your duty to fight it off and sometimes the bear will win. All you want to do is just stay in bed and that’s okay because here are some tips that can help you control your depression.
Depression is common. Most people get depressed, especially teenagers, because they get stressed out or bullied. Most depressed people tend to isolate themselves from the world and that’s not right. You can help people get over depression by helping them eat healthy and having a shoulder they can use whenever they need it.
Mericia Cendejas is a mother of two. She was born and raised in Mexico and now lives in San Jose, California. One of her children, Jesus, suffers from depression, so she has experience with helping someone with depression. I interviewed her to see what it was like through her eyes.
She said that “most people think that depression isn’t a serious thing, but it is. hundreds of people killed themselves because they couldn’t handle the sadness anymore. I didn’t want my child to be one of those poor kids who didn’t have anyone to talk to and their only option was suicide.” She at one point almost gave up on her child, but she thought about the kids who committed suicide and automatically changed her answer and continued to help her son.
Many people get depressed because of their pasts or getting bullied etc. Mericia said that these things that she had been doing have helped Jesus. Here are some of the solutions that can help you or anyone else. Don’t isolate yourself, keep your body healthy and communicate with people about your depression, like a counselor or psychiatrist.
This is how she found out Jesus was dealing with depression. He started isolating himself from her and basically the world. He started not wanting to go to school and missing many days without telling his mom that he wasn’t feeling well. His mom had enough of him not going to school so she asked him what was wrong with him and why was he acting strange. He then said that he was feeling depressed and was having anxiety and couldn’t handle going to school because of all the stress and the panic attacks that he was having. His mom decided to contact the school to see what they can do about it. They said he can see one of the counselors. He then went to the counselor and explained to her what was happening. He even asked if he could get independent studies because he had been missing to many days and there was no way that he could catch up.
Jesus told his mom about his decision, and they spoke about it. She called a family member that Jesus had looked up to. The family member spoke with him for awhile and convinced him to try counseling and to try to fix his grades. Jesus finally fixed his grade from the help of his mom and family members.
According to www.dosomething.org, over 15 million American adults, around 6.7 percent of the U.S. population age 18 and older, suffer from depression in a given year. Women are twice as likely to suffer from depression than men because of body shaming. Depression is a serious thing. Don’t try to fix it by yourself it’s nearly impossible. Talk to someone about it and get the help that you need. Don’t stay quiet because that will lead to something worse.
